Miguel Migs. Saturday, February 27. The Vagabond, 30 NE 14th St., Miami.
For a town so obsessed with dance music, Miami has very few nights devoted to straight-up house. Not electro-, not tech-, just house. And so, besides Aquabooty’s epic events, Backdoor Bamby at the Vagabond has become a required stop for hungry house heads. Titans like Louie Vega and Jellybean Benitez have all become Saturday-night regulars there, and this weekend, Miguel Migs makes a stop at the club, not too long after his last one.

For the last five years, Migs’ real baby has been the label he founded, Salted, which pushes soulful dance music of all tempos, free of nitpicking genre constraints. The DJ/producer’s current tour supports his latest mix for the imprint, Get Salted Volume 2.

It’s funky, deep, gushy, all that stuff, and features tracks from Migs himself, as well as like-minded artists like Fred Everything and the inimitable vocalist Lisa Shaw. It’s a sound that bangs particularly well through the Vagabond’s main-floor sound system, and the gig will provide an intimate taste of Migs’ flavor before the WMC madness begins.

Last night (Monday 21st September) as part of the Giant Step series of events, Miguel Migs graced the decks of the Hudson Hotel, located on the corner of 58th Street and 9th Avenue. As usual, his mixture of smooth, groovy deep house blended well into the fabric of this classy hotel bar. What makes these regular Monday night parties so good is the colorful and energetic crowd, which encompasses a intriguing mixture of clubbers of all ages, backgrounds and personalities. Young, well educated music enthusiasts are dancing to the popular four/four beats amongst experienced, veteran clubbers also enjoying the range of music being blasted through the speakers by the talented DJ from San Francisco.

Miguel was joined halfway though his set by the very talented Lisa Shaw, who’s euphoric, sexy vocals resoundingly complimented the sounds produced by the man behind the decks and resonated through to the hotel lobby. Migs’record label, Salted Music, has seen a lot of success recently with Shaw’s single ‘Free’. Shaw’s powerful performance certainly added additional spice to the night, and both were very well received by a crowded room of partiers, who most likely will be nursing hangovers at some point Tuesday morning.

The Hudson Hotel is a great venue for these Monday night events and revelers can really feel at ease on the dance floor with it’s prominent, checkered disco flooring and cultured crowd. Giant Step have once again delivered with their creative selection of musical talent and are responsible for a number of upcoming events here at the Hudson Hotel as well as at other venues (including the one of Manhattan’s best dance clubs Cielo). These nights are often free if you RSVP and could easily be considered some of the best value parties this island has to offer on a Monday night.

Miguel Migs (real name Miguel Steward, also known by the pseudonym Petalpusher) is a deep house DJ and producer from San Francisco, California.
Migs began his music career at 18 years old, as a lead guitarist and songwriter for a Santa Cruz local band called Zion Sounds. The band split up in the mid-1990s, however Zion Sounds’ African and Jamaican style is said to have been a major influence in Migs’ personal career. After the band dissolved, Miguel Migs went on to explore electronic music production.

Miguel has produced over 100 remixes to date, including remixes for a number of mainstream artists. Such artists include Britney Spears, Macy Gray and Lionel Richie. Migs has been associated with a variety of record labels, most notably Naked Music Recordings.

Miguel co-founded the deep house record label Transport Recordings, along with fellow DJ MFR and Naked Music label director Bruno Ybarra. Migs was credited for his soul-driven vibes and hailed as one of the pioneers of the nascent house and chill-out revival scene alongside Dimitri from Paris and Bob Sinclar as a result of his early foray into Deep House in the late 1990s and early 2000s, releasing several highly sought after singles and remixes under the Petalpusher pseudonym. In 2005 he founded Salted Music, an independent record label.

In early 2008, Migs’ Those Things won in The 7th Annual Independent Music Awards for Best Dance/Electronica Album

When Migs hit the house scene in the late nineties, DJs and fans took notice. After more than a hundred productions on imprints like NRK, OM and Naked Music, he has yet to slow down. Migs tracks act as dance-floor catalysts, but his prowess extends beyond the booth. He also tours with his live band, Petalpusher, delivering a signature style of vocal and dub house laden with strings, brass and funky basslines. The Get Salted tour hits Griffin Lounge this week, allowing Migs to promote his latest release, “Get Salted Volume 2.” These days, he’s dropping everything from disco and soul to jazz and tech house, so expect a wide range of exclusive singles and remixes.
Time for Las Vegas to get a dose of “deep, soulful, funk and dub-inspired dance/electronic music.” That’s what producer/DJ Miguel Migs says he’ll be bringing to the tables when his independent label, Salted Music, partners with the Palms for a pool party on September 5. The Independent Music Awards winner for best dance/electronic album had a candid tête-à-tête with the Weekly about the state of house music in Vegas.

How do you think the electronic-music scene in Vegas differs from your home base in San Francisco, or even the rest of the world?

For the most part, it’s no secret you cruise around Vegas and you hear the same music at every club. You hear the DJs playing almost the same commercial hits back to back to back. And the crowd loves it.

Unfortunately, there’s not a very interesting quality underground dance or electronic-music scene [in Vegas], it seems. But there is a little local scene, and there’s the guys that do Soundbar. They bring in consistent, quality artists and underground acts that branch out and play maybe some more interesting and different stuff than people are used to, and I think that’s important.

The hard part about Vegas is you get a lot of this more commercial crowd that doesn’t really give a shit or care about paying attention to quality, interesting, unheard, underground dance or electronic music. It’s difficult to sometimes get the response from the crowd and the vibe and the energy you might get other places in the world … I think with Vegas, you’re always going to get a few people who really know the music, appreciate it and support it, but most of the time it’s going to be a bunch of tourists that are wanting commercial hits, unfortunately. That’s not what I do, so I’m surprised they book me as much as they do out there [laughs].

Soundbar has been holding strong for eight years and has been fantastic in helping create a core underground house crowd. And lately, versions of house are infiltrating major clubs. But some fans seem adamant that most DJs aren’t spinning “real house music.” What do you recommend newbies do to discover and learn about the genre?

You’re not going to necessarily turn on MTV or the radio and hear some of these really amazing, talented artists that there are all over the world … A lot of people don’t realize it’s such a vast genre these days. Calling something electronic or house to a lot of people means different things. I think it’s important people have an open mind, go out and research and support and maybe buy independent music and help keep this stuff moving along. I love all different kinds of music, and I think it’s a shame for anybody to only be into one style of music; people should always try to expand their musical horizons.

When you work on original productions, is there a certain feel or emotion you’re hoping to convey?

For me, I don’t do music just for people to jump up and down and get as wasted as possible to on the weekends … I try to create a balance where there’s something that you can enjoy and bob your head to and maybe get down to, but feel something on a little bit deeper of a level at the same time. I try to convey this quality and soulful element to the whole dance-music spectrum.

What’s the most important thing for attendees to know about your set on Saturday?

I would say to people in general—especially at these events in Vegas and pool parties—go with an open mind, leave the bad vibes at home and enjoy the sunshine and the music. It’s so strange to me when people expect really banging, hard, commercial music in the daytime when you’re at the pool. I wanna hear some soul, funk—some more interesting elements to the music besides just club hits. I just hope the people will stay a little bit more open-minded and enjoy themselves.
